NEC Infrontia Embeds Change Control from Solidcore as Foundation for Point-of-Sale Systems
Prevents Unauthorized Changes to Reduce Support Costs and Ensure POS System Uptime
PALO ALTO, Calif., Jan. 29, 2007— Solidcore® Systems, Inc., a leader in change control solutions, today announced that NEC Infrontia Corporation, an NEC company (Nasdaq: NIPNY), has selected Solidcore’s S3 Control™ software for Embedded Systems as the foundation for NEC Infrontia’s point-of-sale (POS) devices. Solidcore’s unique change policy enforcement capabilities enable NEC Infrontia to control when changes can be applied to POS systems – resulting in improved service availability and reduced support costs.
POS solutions today are highly networked and more dependent on general-purpose operating systems, making them more vulnerable to unauthorized changes and susceptible to constant patching. The Solidcore change control software runs transparently on POS devices to prevent unauthorized changes that cause in-field breakage, and reduces the patching cycles that drive up support costs. Solidcore ensures that only software updates authorized by NEC Infrontia are applied to in-production systems, and prevents any unauthorized installations, upgrades or modifications to the base software image when POS devices are in-production.
"We identified uncontrolled change as the primary cause of POS unavailability issues and maintenance costs for our POS devices," said Hiroshi Komura, general manager, i-Appliance division for NEC Infrontia Corporation. "Embedding Solidcore into our POS systems gives us complete control and certainty over what changes on each device. The added control enables us to drastically reduce our support costs by preventing all out-of-policy changes and eliminating emergency patching procedures."
Solidcore’s S3 Control software for Embedded Systems is a small footprint, low-overhead change control solution. The product quickly installs to enforce a device owner’s change policy and provides protection against changes generated by unauthorized users. The product can also be utilized to enforce the control requirements for Sarbanes-Oxley, PCI, and other regulatory mandates. Solidcore’s S3 Control solution provides benefits to both retailers and device manufacturers. Retailers gain higher availability and better security for their in-store POS system, and device manufactures like NEC Infrontia benefit from reduced support costs normally incurred from continuous patching and servicing of POS devices.
"Anyone shipping a device with a general-purpose operating system can benefit from higher service availability and reduced support costs by embedding change control on that device," said Jim Sarale, vice president of embedded solutions for Solidcore. "Solidcore can enforce change policies at the device-level to prevent any out-of-policy changes that would otherwise create costly service outages and support calls."
